“The end is nigh.” The established order is on the brink of losing its stranglehold on television entertainment. We are looking at a new technological paradigm in the dissemination of content. While change can be scary, this is an awesome advancement for the consumer.
The media center PC idea allows you to integrate computer technology with the capabilities of your typical living room entertainment center. This permits you to watch television and movies on your computer. The versatility of available content on the internet makes for a tremendously superior experience to the usual home theater setup.
A tuner card can be used to incorporate normal television signals into your computer environment. It will enable you to record TV episodes and burn them to DVD. Many modern video cards permit you to export content from your PC to your TV. You can also import your music files and images into your home theater system. The options are limitless.
Some have theorized that online content will bring an end to broadcast TV. Why pay for cable or satellite television service when you could just as easily watch the same content on your computer for free on your schedule? A computer can be connected to your TV without significant technical expertise. This seems to render the old cable box obsolete. Why should you have to watch your favorite shows on someone else’s schedule? Most TV programs are planning to offer the same content on the internet, indeed, some of it is already available. This means that there is a redundancy between TV and web content. If you connect a computer to your TV, you can watch a lot of the same content on your schedule. As bandwidth speeds increase, the picture quality will get better too. This will only make it simpler to see high quality internet content on your TV.
Since most internet content is ad-supported, it makes money in a similar way to cable television. Looking forward, all content providers will be able to turn a profit offering their shows on-demand. This is a massive improvement over the way we had to get our television in the past.
This also gives more freedom to the independent content provider. You no longer need to be able to afford a huge television station in order to create and broadcast content. The internet creates an environment in which the independent arts can flourish, and this new technology can bring the fruits of their labor to the home entertainment center. More competition in the creation and distribution of content makes for better overall quality.
The consumer really benefits from this boom in new technology. The price of a media center PC will continue to decline as more devices are created. The bandwidth capacity of internet service providers will grow over time too. Wireless high-speed internet access is scheduled to soon reach rural markets. As last mile technology grows, more consumers will join us in this technological revolution.
Fear not this atmosphere of technological advancement. The computer is the key to the future of television. We will soon be able to watch any program we want at any time. Wireless technology will improve the communication between all of our household electronics. We are at the forefront of a major paradigm shift in the way we consume media.
